What is the best battery discharger that can discharge lead acid battery from 24 volts to 80 volts?
Please recommend reliable brands for discharging motive power lead acid battery! Thanks!!
Load! This can be done a number of ways! Of course technically all any "load" is is "resistance"! So you need some sort of "consuming device"! This could be an electric motor, a light bulb (or bunchof light bulbs) - or resistor of some sort. Usualy a "discharging load" is a very heavy resistance wire "coil" set up in fireproof insulators. The heavier the resistance wire is the more current (amps) it can consume and dissapate the heat safely! The lower the resistance of load is, the faster it will dicharge battery! Here again "technically"- the lower the resistance is - the closer to a "dead short" it berecomes! So a low resistance load will discharge battery quidkly (and produce loads of heat), - so it must be able to carry very high amps without burning up!
These are the paparameters you must be expecting to work within! So the bigger the battery (amp capacity) the heavier built the load must be!, - the higher the voltage, - the more voltage capacity the load must be also! Size capacity and voltage all affect the expense of your "load" used,- to "drain the battery" -of electricity!
This load can be made a number of ways as mentioned in beginning, - and you can try to economize and build your own,- here again the exspense is directly going to be governed by how fast you want to discharge the battery! So something as simple as a "load bank" made out of bulbs- gernerally old headlight bulbs from automobiles are the cheapest route, - you just need to hook them together in series till you have enough to carry about 5-6 volts more than "power supply" (battery) is rated to deliver! with "multi voltage" changes you will need several sets that can be hooked together, or some short of "swithcing" setup to put in to add or subtract bulbs to get "voltage capacity" you need! Ever notice how leaving the headlights on when you leave the car "runs the batery down"! The total consumption of all the bulbs burning that are on with headlights on,- lisc plate,park,tail,instrument cluster lights (inside car),- and headlight bulbs (only one beam-(or)- one filiament on each side is burning in headlights at any time). All these together add up to about the equivalent of 4 headlight bulbs burning at the same time and together tehey pull probably 15-20 amps per hour! so they take maybe 5 hours to rum batery down enough taht car won't start, and maybe 12 hours to rum battery "stone dead"! The last item is that the more the "load consumes" the more heat you will have to dissapate! hold your hands in front of a headlight on a car for a several minutes, and you wil feel the heat, - (don't touch glass (unless you apply powert to after your hand is on glass)! you need "time" to remove hand before it burns you -- glass will get very hot after a little while and it could burn skin! So (you can see) you need some sort of cooling of ventellation available -- possibly a fan, (another consumer of electricity) to move air across or out of area!
Maybe you can get lucky and find some "carbon pile" resistores - which are adjustable to some extent, - In WW2 B17s had them in charging systems fro engine driven generators-- (were lots of them available when I was a kid - and fairly cheap then) . You might be able to buy this kind of resistor yet , - if you just looked in right place!
You might be able to find out the most information if you can find somebody around that "rebuilds batteries" -- they will know where to buy this stuff, because these things are part of "business equipment"! Unfortuantely these are getting harder to find, since all the laws and practices to "save the world" are in place to "guard ecology"! When I was a kid, there was a "rebuilder' in almost any town-- everything was "rationed" - so a rebuilder was a welcome resident, -- it might be the only way you could get a battery for your car! (And even then it wasn't always easy)!!
