Does how fast a capacitor charge depend on it's capacitance? Voltage or both?
i have a little project of mine that i found sparked when i touched two wires together. if you held them close enough they made a tazer sound and the little 22nf 450v film cap that i had i think was causing it by discharging correct? Now does the charge time dependant on the capacitance or the voltage? can you have a low low capacitance, like in the nano/pico range and say can hold 1600 volt, will it charge just as fast or pretty close as fast as the 450v one??
Charge time depends on the resistance of the charging circuit, and on the capacitance.
You can calculate the time constant as t = RC, and this is the time it takes to charge up to about 37% of the final value. After 5 time constants it gets to 99% of the final value.
Every voltage source has a source resistance. So the charge time, if you connect the cap directly across the supply, depends on the internal source resistance of the supply.
Larger caps, it's safer to add a small resistance, say 100 ohms in series to limit the inrush current, which could damage the cap.
