johnson outboard stuck down in water. release won't work. how do i get down lock to release so i can transport
the release mechanism on the starboard side is "sheared" off. Rotates half the pin but does not have any effect.. normally this control is lifted which releases the motor so it can be lowered or raised by hand. The motor is a 28 hp johnson outboard with an older omc drive. thanks if you can help
The pins on some of the older ones are two pieces, one from the starboard and one from the port. They are coupled in the center with a bellcrank. If the screw came loose, this could be your problem. The bellcrank usually pulls on a link that pops the reverse lock. If you can, get a flat screwdriver up under the center of the swivel bracket and see if you can pop the reverse lock bracket. They are designed to release if you hit a log, so sometimes you can jerk the motor back and release it, but it's hard to do without wrenching your back.
