Does a "motor circuit protector" provide the same benefit as a "thermal overload protector"?
Or is the motor circuit protector with a variable FLA setting just a glorified, more customizable circuit breaker? Does that mean that a MCP will not protect against overheating and burnout from sustained motor overwork?

Not at all. The purpose of each one is very different.
One is to protect the motor and the other is to protect the motor "circuit".
The thermal overload protector is the only one designed to protect the motor. It does a simulation of the motor dynamics and trips when the motor is supposed to be overloaded i.e. when the temperature of the motor is too high.
A motor circuit protector has nothing to do with protecting the motor. rather, it is designed to protect the power source i.e. feeding transformer, cables. In other words its function is to protect the motor feeding circuit and not the motor itself. In the event the motor gets short-circuited its the function is to disconnect the short-circuited motor from the source and insulate the problem. I think you are right if you think of it as a circuit breaker.
