how to adapt a 220 dryer plug into a 220 oven plug, prongs are different...?
I have an old kiln (30amp) in my garage where a dryer was plugged in. The cord goes to a 30amp fuse box. The kiln has 3 prongs that are straight, the dryer plug has 2 straight prongs and an "L" shaped one. I'd like to get some sort of adapter to be able to plug this kiln into the dryer receptacle.
No, it won't result in a fire, although you have a risk of burning out the kiln wiring if something goes wrong. The wire in the walls is capable of handling 50 amps, while the kiln only needs 30 amps. The best choice would to buy a replacement 30 amp breaker and install it with a note marking the change. Then install a 30 amp outlet on the wall end to plug the kiln into. Keep the 50 amp breaker and outlet together so they can be installed on the heavy wiring, with notes.
Alternatives would be to
1: buy a replacement 50 amp cord for the kiln, keeping the old one for future use.
2. buy the same cord, but also buy a metal electrical box that will hold a 30 amp outlet and mount it - so you have an "adapter" several feet long.
You do have another problem. 3 prong 240 volt outlets and plugs are no longer legal to use commercially. All ranges and ovens (since about 1999) come with 4 prong plugs: 2 hots, a neutral, and a safety ground, when a change in the safety code no longer allowed an exception that permitted one wire to be used for neutral and safety on ranges and dryers. If an electrician does the changes to the 240 line, code may require that the 4th wire be added, which may be costly to get through the walls. I don't consider changing a breaker and outlet to require an electrician, but I have a permit to work on my own home for everything electrical from passing a test given by the code department.
