Horse cut his hoof in barb wire fence what kind of medicine should I use on this open wound?
Appaloosa 7 yr. old horse cut his hoof on barb wire fence going thru it. It is ripped up from the bottom of his hock on up his leg and the back of his hoof looks like raw hamburger where he sawed it on the fence. I need some wonder medicine to put on here and should I wrap it. What would a person clean it with and should I put him up in the corral or let him keep working on it.
You need to get a vet to see him, as soon as possible. It is very easy for these wounds to get infected and he may need to be treated with antibiotics to ward off infection- and if he is not up to date on shots, he will likely need a tetanus shot. You have likely heard the saying 'no hoof, no horse', he needs to get his hoof looked at, you don't want him going lame down the road. I don't think anyone here can suggest what you should do for your horse, he needs a professional opinion. Good Luck!
